An impossible locked room murder: Captain Mortuga lies dead beside an ancient cauldron aboard the world’s strangest submarine, crewed by sketchy suspects. A handcrafted point and click with sharp humour and tricky puzzles. Dive into the next mystery from the creators of Tangle Tower & Crow Country.

The Mermaid Mask is striking in its brevity, yet it succeeds in reintroducing the peculiar sensibility that has defined the lineage of Detective Grimoire and Tangle Tower. Its world is rendered through expressive two dimensional character animation, while collectible objects shift into three dimensional inspection models that invite a more tactile form of engagement. This contrast between illustrated surfaces and sculpted artifacts remains one of the studio most distinctive signatures. The narrative fragments offered here are slight but they gesture toward a mystery that will rely on attentive observation rather than spectacle.
The art direction continues to project a confident sense of identity and the tonal balance between whimsy and quiet intrigue remains intact. What the demo withholds is as notable as what it reveals. It offers only a taste of the investigative structure, the character interplay, and the broader thematic arc. As a result, the experience functions less as a showcase and more as a measured signal that the studio is preparing something deliberate. With the full release scheduled for the sixteenth of July, the central question becomes what new narrative and mechanical ideas the team will bring forth when the complete work finally arrives.
Across all major genre categories, The Mermaid Mask maintains an average standing within the top 20 games within its genre. It delivers consistent quality in narrative presentation, character expression, visual identity, and clue interaction, yet it does not introduce structural innovations that shift the boundaries of the mystery adventure genre. The work demonstrates competence and polish rather than reinvention. Its systems function reliably, its aesthetic remains distinctive, and its pacing reflects a clear understanding of genre expectations, but no single category exhibits a transformative leap. The result is a well executed entry that reinforces the strengths of its lineage without redefining any of its core components.
Rating 3 out of 5 Thumbs: 👍 👍👍 (This is the strongest category. The studio’s signature style remains unmatched in the mystery adventure niche. Expressive animation and sculpted object design place it near the top of the genre.)

To reach the top of the mystery adventure genre, The Mermaid Mask would have needed to advance its formula beyond the studio’s established strengths and introduce a structural innovation that redefined how players investigate, interpret, and resolve narrative puzzles. The work already demonstrates polished art direction, expressive character animation, and reliable clue interaction, but these qualities place it within the upper middle tier rather than at the summit. The genre’s best entries achieve their status by altering the expectations of investigation itself, either through radical systemic depth, transformative narrative structure, or a new method of presenting evidence.
The Mermaid Mask would have needed a more ambitious interrogation system that allowed player intent to shape the direction of conversations rather than simply selecting from predefined dialogue options. A dynamic contradiction framework, branching emotional states, or a reputation system that influenced witness behavior would have elevated its investigative depth. The clue inspection mechanic, although tactile and visually distinct, would have benefited from stronger systemic consequences. Objects could have interacted with one another, changed state based on player actions, or revealed layered information that required synthesis rather than simple observation.
Narratively, the work would have needed a more structurally daring mystery. The genre’s most celebrated titles succeed because their central case challenges the player’s assumptions and demands interpretive reasoning rather than linear deduction. A multi case structure, a shifting perspective system, or a narrative device that recontextualizes earlier evidence would have provided the level of ambition required to define the genre’s peak.
In essence, the title needed one decisive innovation that altered how mystery adventures function. Without that leap, it remains polished, confident, and visually distinctive, but not transformative.
