Wax Heads (PC)

Wax Heads is a calm and story driven experience that focuses on the small tasks of running a late 1986 record shop. Most of the challenges involve making simple flyers for local bands and helping customers choose records. The entire game is built around nostalgia for an alternative music scene that no longer exists. Every record title is fictional and the game leans into parody as it recreates the feeling of suggesting albums to customers who may or may not know what they want. The dialogue is long and cannot be avoided completely. You can speed through it, but you cannot skip it. The writing tries to pull you into the world, but it can become tiring over time. The replay value is light and the current price of 12,74€ makes the experience difficult to recommend.

I can respect the art and the in game music, but the overall package is limited. If you prefer narrative driven experiences over complex gameplay, this title may still be for you.

Final Verdict

Rating Thumbs: 👎(Not exciting) 👍(maybe an interesting read?) …. We cannot recommend this though it is perfect for anyone who feels stressed out.

Technical Performance: There were no bugs and the game is solidly put together.
Controls and UI: Simple
Content and Depth: Venue related
Fairness and Monetization: 12,74€. Game for Life
Price to Value: It falls inside a niche category that is more click than think, and even though you do visit other locations in the world, the overall experience remains dull. The pace is very slow and relaxed.
